Salal Center
The client purchased a building for their new headquarters intending to renovate the interior and exterior spaces to suit their needs. The challenge was to transform the stark, unusable entry and outdated, overgrown landscape into an inviting space that reflected the modern, fresh image of its new owner. After exploring some preliminary concepts with the clients in concert with the project architects, a plan for a pedestrian plaza was born. The new landscape includes an open, expansive entry corridor and welcoming outdoor space with seating for tenants, employees and visitors that fosters a sense of community. Plantings include Salal (Gaultheria shallon) and other Pacific Northwest native plants that reflect the company’s branding and local roots. Large boulders and the simplicity of mostly green foliage help to ground the structure while supporting its clean modern lines, giving it renewed relevance. Permeable pavers meet current stormwater codes and reflect the grid pattern on the building while designating the plaza as separate from the surrounding sidewalks.
