Ballard Bungalow

This newly restored bungalow called for a garden that matched its charm.  The owner, a master gardener, asked me to create a comprehensive plan. Her priorities included using repurposed materials, a space for intimate gatherings, and screening from the apartment house next door. The pathway to the front porch is made of repurposed brick from the original chimney chase and the arbor is made from fir posts no longer needed when the basement ceiling was raised.  In the backyard, dappled shade beneath a canopy of mature trees is an ideal spot for colorful shade plantings. The broadleaf shrubs and Japanese maples(Acer palmatum) provide structure while perennials create a lush spot for cool summertime dining or a weekend garden party. The owner has a flair for creating a casual vibe with repurposed items like the wooden dining set that has taken on a rustic patina adding to the relaxed feeling of this garden.
